How YouTube’s algorithm actually works
YouTube's algorithm cares about a small number of metrics very deeply: average view duration (in seconds, not percentage), click-through rate from impressions, and session time (does this video keep viewers watching YouTube longer overall). The platform rewards videos that retain viewers across long arcs, which is why patience matters more here than anywhere else.
What works on YouTube (and what’s overrated)
- Average view duration in seconds, not percentage — a 10-minute video at 50% retention beats a 2-minute at 90%.
- CTR (click-through rate from impressions) is your thumbnail and title doing their job. Below 4% is concerning.
- Shorts and long-form are ranked separately — treat them as parallel content tracks.
- Sub count is mostly vanity. Returning-viewer percentage is the actual health metric.
